There’s an Owl

How could I forget my knowing?

Slowly, like a wave erodes the shore.

Stolen inch by inch until I gave you more,

Freely; of my own accord.

Until it became the new way,

Then it was just the way.

Walking, always just behind.

At a pace you set without direction.

Speeding up like a race,

you turn a corner to nowhere.

Stopped in my tracks, you held my keys

For safekeeping,

So I couldn’t go back.

I reached for the knife you got me.

And remembered it was not there.

It was never there.

Because you forgot to put one there.

Like promised.

You always had one hand on a knife,

and the other on my keys.

But forgot to walk with me.

There’s an owl.
